The recent death of a British woman reminds us that leptospirosis is
not that rare in the UK. In fact, rates are somewhat higher than
those reported in the USA (see graph
<http://exhibit.gideononline.com/lepto.jpg>) and 18 fatal cases were
reported in England and Wales during 1988 to 2006. The information

[Our thanks to Dr. Steve Berger for pointing out that while perhaps
not widely known, leptospirosis is not that rare in the UK (and the
continental USA and other temperate climate countries). What is
unusual and noteworthy in both countries is when there are
significant outbreaks and large numbers of fatalities, usually
associated with either immune compromise or delayed treatment due to
either presentation to the health sector late in the course of
illness or missed diagnosis. - Mod.MPP]
