The following information relates to the question of the proper
nomenclature for the current pandemic strain of influenza A (H1N1) as
discussed in "Influenza A (H1N1) - worldwide (83): antiviral
resistance 20090705.2417".
For common reference to the virus and the disease, WHO, OIE & FAO are
now officially using "pandemic (H1N1) 2009" (e.g. there were 2378 new
confirmed cases of pandemic (H1N1) 2009 reported...) and "pandemic
(H1N1) 2009 virus." Some documents remain with previous designations
and are in the process of being changed over.
The designation "(H1N1)v" is being used for the individual isolate
nomenclature (e.g. A/California/7/2009(H1N1)v).

[In future, ProMED-mail will conform to the above nomenclature now
officially agreed to by WHO, OIE and FAO. That is: A/... (H1N1)v will
designate individual isolates, and the general term will be "pandemic
(H1N1) 2009".
